Non-Profits
Non Profits > Andover Service Club
Among the many delights of rural living is the need to sustain a 'do-it-yourself attitude'. And so, back in the 1950's when most women were 'stay-at-home' housewives/moms, a group of Andover ladies were encouraged to band together to enrich their own lives and to reach out to our community, as well. They established the 'Service Club' half a century ago and have sustained it to this very day. It was modified over these years to be more effective as various needs arose, but its basic philosophy and purpose still maintain the tenets of the original constitution. That is:
1. To be of service to the people of the community and state.
2. To broaden and strengthen the social and intellectual life of its members.
Its current membership includes many actively involved women who meet monthly from September to June. Most of our activities are coordinated at these monthly meetings. Various welfare/enrichment issues for our members and neighbors are discussed, diverse ways to raise funds are considered, and activities to attain our goals are planned. We encourage 100% participation so that each member's opinion is heard and, hopefully, we arrive at unilateral agreements. After conducting our business affairs, the women usually enjoy a social gathering with lectures, presentations, discussions, slide shows, etc.
Early on the 1990's the group founded its Thrift Shop, which has since grown to become a most equitable community service, offering clothing, shoes, and jewelry for sale. This endeavor is now operated from its own building right behind the Andover Town Hall and functions entirely by volunteer help from its members. Proceeds from the Thrift Shop are used to fund our many charitable projects.
Some of the various local and state-wide organizations we support are the following: our Andover school, our two libraries, the rescue squad, drug education agencies, the Girl Scouts, One-Wheelers, the Council on Aging, Child/Family Services of NH, the Spaulding Youth Center, Twin River Support services, and we award yearly scholarships to local students entering or continuing in college or those pursuing other courses of study.
To commemorate our 50 years of service we will this year publish Andover Service Club, Our Town Andover, a 2008 service and business directory, to be distributed to all residents and will include information pertaining to town government and businesses
Membership in the Andover Service Club is open to all women in our community or surrounding communities. Do feel welcome come to our meetings, participate in our activities and become a member. For more information, visit the Thrift Shop and chat with one of us.
